'Never Gonna Give You Up' Has A Crazy Bass Line!! (tabs & tutorial)
Today, Talkingbass is getting Rick Rolled. Yes, we’re going to look at the bass line for the song 'Never Gonna Give You Up' by Rick Astley.
Yes, I know the original is a synth bass line but let me tell you, the bass line is great to learn for loads of reasons. It features a bunch of syncopated 16th notes and from a harmony standpoint this bass line is pretty weird. In fact the whole thing is plain weird.
Tabs and track are included with this tutorial.

I tried flats once, thinking they'd be easier on the fingers. I ended up disliking their feel a lot more and went back to rounds. The trick is you just gotta toughen up. My plucking fingers are like leather now.

I first heard Pino Palladino on Gary Numan's 1982 album I Assassin. Gary pushed Pino's bass to to forefront of the music. The most well know song is Music for chameleons as seen on the Alan Partridge comedy show. As an aside Joe Hubbard played Bass with Gary on his extensive 1983 Warriors tour. So both maestro's played bass for Gary.

Great lesson Mark as always. I never studied Steve’s technique because I only had vinyl so I came up with my own. I use a very different technique, 1. bass slung a lot lower Al a Steve 2. Arm and wrist hanging naturally and wrist straight and relaxed. 3. I use 3 fingers in various combinations, this is obviously different to Steve other worldly approach but as mentioned this was 1980 ish. It’s more like a Billy Sheehan style a mate mine had it nailed and shared his way of doing it and we shared or interpretions. The one thing that is the same is the light touch there’s no way you play this hard unless you’re Eddie Hall or Thor

The bassline of this song is so “mechanic”, because this was time when HOUSE music just got commercial, and this song felt a lot like house (which was a part of its success in the charts). I remember this song being distinct from other songs because of this very different bassline, which was not quite playing along with the chords, but playing “something else” instead (“stubborn” in a way, ignoring the rest of the song, but somehow still managing to blend in). The premise of house music back then was sampling a bunch of different things and blending them together, that’s why the bassline feels so “off”. I’d suggest you to take a look at yet another Stock Aitken Waterman song: “Nothing’s gonna stop me now”, by Samantha Fox. This bassline is very special, ritch in terms where it goes, although it’s all octaves. Because of this, it’s quite hard to remember how to sing the song (the pitch of the mellody), and you’ll find some unsuccessfull karaoke attempts here on UA-cam. It’s a synth bass, plus slaps on the real bass.

I didn’t actually realise until now. It’s not a sample, but it’s definitely a copy of the line. This is why it’s so odd in the Stock, Aitken and Waterman version. The harmony is different, making for that odd clash. Thanks for the heads up.
